Metro Adds Bike Lockers at 10 Stations

Washington Metro riders who bike to stations will get upgraded parking facilities at 10 locations starting March 23, transit officials said. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's installing new bike lockers, smart racks, repair stations, and U racks through April 30 at stations from Pentagon City to Rockville. Existing bike parking will be temporarily unavailable during installation at each location.

System-Wide Upgrade Program

The bike parking improvements are part of WMATA's effort to encourage multimodal commuting and make stations more accessible for cyclists, according to the transit agency. Metro's been expanding bike amenities in recent years as ridership patterns shift and more commuters combine cycling with rail travel. The upgrades address longstanding requests from riders for more secure bike storage options and better facilities at station entrances. Transit agencies nationwide have been investing in bike infrastructure as cities promote car-free commuting options.

Ten Stations Getting New Facilities

Pentagon City receives upgrades March 23, followed by Braddock Road on March 25, Foggy Bottom on March 27, and Eastern Market on March 30. April installations include Fort Totten on April 1, College Park on April 7, East Falls Church on April 9, Minnesota Avenue on April 14, Downtown Largo on April 20, and Rockville on April 28. The new bike lockers will be accessible through an app, with instructions provided on locker decals, officials said. All installation dates are tentative and subject to change, according to WMATA.

Temporary Disruptions During Work

Existing bike lockers and racks may be temporarily unavailable at affected stations during installation, transit officials said. Customers should remove all personal property from existing lockers and racks by the posted dates at each station, according to WMATA. Once installation's complete, the new facilities will be available for immediate use. The agency said it'll update the advisory throughout the installation period as work progresses.

What Riders Need to Know

Cyclists using affected stations should plan for temporary parking disruptions and check posted notices for specific dates at their station. The new smart racks and app-accessible lockers will provide more secure storage than previous facilities once installations are finished.
