Metro Adds Bike Lockers at 10 Stations

Washington Metro riders who bike to stations will get upgraded parking facilities at 10 locations starting March 23. The transit agency's installing new bike lockers, smart racks, repair stations, and U racks across the system through late April, officials said. Existing bike parking may be temporarily unavailable during installation at each station.

Comprehensive Upgrade Program

The bike parking improvements are part of WMATA's effort to encourage multimodal commuting and provide secure facilities for cyclists, transit officials said. The agency's replacing older bike infrastructure with modern amenities that include app-based locker access and on-site repair capabilities. Metro systems nationwide have expanded bike facilities in recent years as agencies work to attract riders who combine cycling with transit. The upgrades address longstanding requests from cycling advocates for better security and convenience at station entrances.

Ten Stations Getting New Facilities

Pentagon City receives new amenities March 23, followed by Braddock Road on March 25, Foggy Bottom on March 27, and Eastern Market on March 30. April installations include Fort Totten on April 1, College Park on April 7, East Falls Church on April 9, Minnesota Avenue on April 14, Largo Town Center on April 20, and Rockville on April 28. The new lockers will use an app-based access system with instructions provided on locker decals, officials said. All installation dates are tentative and subject to change, according to the transit agency.

Temporary Disruptions During Work

Existing bike lockers and racks will be temporarily unavailable at each station during installation, officials said. Riders are advised to remove all personal property from current lockers and racks by the posted dates at their stations. The new facilities will be available for immediate use once installation's complete at each location. Work at all 10 stations should wrap up by April 30.

What Riders Need to Know

Cyclists should plan alternative bike storage during installation periods at their regular stations or consider using nearby Metro stations that aren't undergoing upgrades. The new smart racks and lockers will provide enhanced security compared to existing facilities, officials said. Moovit provides real-time service information and station details for Metro riders planning trips that combine biking and transit.
