Metro Transforms New Carrollton Into Transit Hub

Metro's transforming New Carrollton Metrorail Station into a mixed-use transit hub with entertainment, residential, retail and commercial office space, officials said. The development will create an urbanized town center connected to Metro, Amtrak, MARC, Greyhound and the future Purple Line. Joint development and construction activities are impacting parking, traffic and pedestrian access at the station.

Multi-Modal Hub Anchors Regional Development

The transformation positions New Carrollton as one of the region's largest transit hubs, officials said. The plan includes a walkable community designed to integrate multiple transportation modes in a single location. Transit agencies typically pursue joint development projects to maximize land use around stations while generating revenue and increasing ridership. The project represents a shift toward transit-oriented development that combines housing, retail and transportation access.

Parking Capacity Reaches 3,593 Spaces

Both parking garages at the station currently provide 3,593 total spaces, according to Metro. The P2 Parking Garage reopened Monday, September 8, 2025, giving customers access to both facilities. The P2 garage entrance is located off Garden City and New Carrollton Station, while the P1 Garage can be accessed via Garden City and Corporate Drive. Customers may experience delays, congestion and changes to travel patterns upon exiting due to ongoing construction within the parking garage.

Purple Line Work Closes Kiss & Ride Lot

MTA Purple Line construction resulted in parking impacts, with a portion of the Park & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closing to conduct bus operations beginning the week of September 9, 2024. The Kiss & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed Sunday, October 27, 2024 for approximately one year. Amtrak's upgrading and modernizing the existing platform and building a new platform to track 1 to provide enhanced accommodations and amenities, officials said.
