Metro Transforms New Carrollton Into Transit Hub

Metro's transforming New Carrollton Metrorail Station into a mixed-use development with entertainment, residential, retail and commercial office space, transit officials said. The project includes an urbanized town center and walkable community connected to one of the region's largest transit hubs with access to Metro, Amtrak, MARC, Greyhound and the future MDOT MTA Purple Line. Joint development and construction activities are impacting parking, traffic and pedestrian access at the station.

Development Reshapes Regional Transit Access

The transformation represents a shift toward transit-oriented development that integrates multiple transportation modes with commercial and residential uses, according to the transit agency. Officials said the plan aims to create a walkable community centered around the transit hub. The P2 Parking Garage reopened Monday, September 8, 2025, giving customers access to both parking garages at the station. Both garages currently provide a total parking capacity of 3,593 spaces, though customers may experience delays, congestion and changes to travel patterns upon exiting due to ongoing construction within the parking garage.

Purple Line Work Closes Parking Areas

MTA Purple Line construction has resulted in parking impacts at the station. A portion of the Park & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed to conduct bus operations beginning the week of September 9, 2024. The Kiss & Ride Lot along Ellin Road closed Sunday, October 27, 2024 for approximately one year. The P2 garage entrance is located off Garden City and New Carrollton Station, while the P1 Garage can be accessed via Garden City and Corporate Drive.
