Metro Adds Canopy at Tenleytown-AU Station
Metro riders using the Tenleytown-AU East Station will see construction crews installing a new protective canopy starting May 4, 2026. The project marks Phase 4 of Metro's systemwide effort to shield escalators and customers from rain, snow, and other weather conditions, transit officials said. The station entrance and escalators will remain open throughout construction, which will take place only during non-revenue hours.

Part of Systemwide Infrastructure Upgrade
The Tenleytown installation is part of a larger initiative to replace or install nine canopies across the Metrorail system by 2026, according to Metro. Transit officials said the canopies are designed to protect both riders and critical infrastructure from weather exposure. The protective structures help extend the life, longevity, and reliability of Metro's escalators, which are vulnerable to moisture damage and weather-related wear. Officials didn't specify which other stations will receive canopies or provide a detailed timeline for the remaining installations.
Construction Limited to Overnight Hours
Construction crews will work exclusively during non-revenue hours to minimize disruption to riders, Metro confirmed. The approach allows the station entrance and escalators to remain fully operational during regular service hours. Officials didn't provide an estimated completion date for the Phase 4 installation or specify how many weeks the construction will take. Metro said the overnight work schedule is standard practice for infrastructure projects that don't require full station closures.
Work Begins Early May
The canopy installation will begin May 4, 2026, at the Tenleytown-AU East Station Entrance, according to Metro. Officials said customers can stay informed about construction progress through multiple channels including MetroAlerts, which provide free text and email notifications. The transit agency's MetroPulse mobile app offers real-time service information and live chat features for riders seeking updates.

Riders Can Access Real-Time Updates
Metro riders can monitor construction progress and any service impacts through the transit agency's notification systems, officials said. Customer Care is available Monday through Friday from 7am to 8pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm for questions about the project. Moovit provides real-time updates for Metro routes and station information, helping riders plan trips around construction activity at Tenleytown-AU East Station.
