Metro Adds Weather Canopies to Boost Reliability
Metro installs weather-protective canopies at Arlington Cemetery station through 2026
Metro Adds Canopies at Arlington Cemetery Station
Metro's installing weather-protective canopies at Arlington Cemetery station's north and south entrances, a project that'll shield riders and escalators from the elements through summer 2026. The work began June 5, 2023, and represents part of a systemwide effort to add nine canopies across Metrorail by 2026. Both station entrances remain open during construction, which takes place only during non-revenue hours.

Systemwide Infrastructure Upgrade
The canopy installations address a critical infrastructure need across Metro's aging system, where weather exposure accelerates escalator wear and creates maintenance challenges. Transit officials said the protective structures extend escalator lifespan and improve reliability by shielding mechanical components from rain, snow, and ice. Arlington Cemetery station's two canopies are among nine planned installations systemwide, part of Metro's broader capital improvement program. The agency didn't provide cost estimates for the individual canopy projects or the total systemwide initiative.
Construction Progress and Specifications
Steel erection is complete at both the north and south Memorial Drive entrances, with crews now installing skylight framing and glass panels. The canopies cover escalators at entrances on opposite sides of Memorial Drive, providing protection at the station's primary access points. Officials said the structures are designed to withstand regional weather conditions while allowing natural light through skylight panels. The two elevators on Memorial Drive's north side that serve both platform sides remain operational throughout construction, ensuring accessible station access continues uninterrupted.

Extended Timeline Through 2026
The project will continue through summer 2026, though officials haven't provided specific monthly milestones or a completion date within that timeframe. All construction work occurs during non-revenue hours when trains aren't running, minimizing rider disruption. Metro didn't specify which phases of work remain or how long skylight installation will take before the canopies become fully operational.
Station Access and Rider Information
Both entrances remain fully accessible during the three-year construction period, with no service interruptions planned. Riders can access real-time project updates through MetroAlerts and customer service channels. Moovit provides real-time Metro service information and trip planning for riders navigating the system during ongoing construction projects.
