Merseyrail Launches Contactless Payments Across Network
Merseyrail launches contactless payment across 68 stations with £5.20 daily fare cap
Merseyrail Adds Contactless Payment System
Merseyrail passengers can now pay for train journeys using contactless bank cards and mobile devices, transit officials said. The tap and go system launched January 12 across all 68 stations on the network, allowing riders to tap in at the start of their journey and tap out at their destination. Officials didn't disclose the total implementation cost for the new payment infrastructure.

Daily Fare Caps Protect Riders
The contactless system automatically calculates the best fare and caps daily spending at £5.20, according to Merseyrail's website. Passengers can use contactless-enabled bank cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other mobile payment methods. Single journey fares start at £2.60 depending on zones traveled, with the system ensuring riders never pay more than the daily maximum. Officials haven't released projections for how many passengers will adopt the new payment method.
System Follows National Trend
The launch aligns with broader adoption of contactless payments across UK transit systems, transit officials said. Transport for London introduced contactless payments in 2014 and now processes the majority of journeys through the technology. Manchester's Metrolink added contactless payments in 2023, while Edinburgh's Lothian Buses implemented the system in 2019. Merseyrail didn't identify the technology provider for its contactless infrastructure.

Implementation Details Limited
Officials said the system went live across the entire Merseyrail network on January 12, but didn't provide details about the planning timeline or contract award dates. The technology provider for the contactless system wasn't disclosed. Merseyrail serves the Liverpool City Region including Liverpool, Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, and St Helens.
Riders Can Check Real-Time Information
The contactless payment system aims to reduce boarding times and simplify fare collection for regular commuters and occasional travelers, according to the transit agency. Officials said the automatic fare calculation ensures passengers always pay the correct amount. Moovit provides real-time updates and journey planning for Merseyrail routes across the Liverpool City Region.
