Merseyrail Goes Contactless Across All 68 Stations
Merseyrail launches contactless payment across 68 stations, following London and Manchester
Merseyrail Adds Contactless Payment System
Merseyrail riders can now tap contactless cards or mobile devices to pay for trips across the network's 68 stations. Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram launched the tap-and-go system Tuesday, eliminating the need for traditional tickets. The change affects all seven lines serving the Liverpool City Region, though officials didn't disclose implementation costs.

Part of Broader Modernization Effort
The contactless launch follows Merseyrail's introduction of a new train fleet in 2024, according to transit officials. Andy Heath, Managing Director at Merseyrail, said the system removes barriers to travel and makes using the network as easy as possible. The technology mirrors contactless payment systems already familiar to millions from retail purchases. Specific fare pricing for contactless versus traditional tickets wasn't immediately available.
System Mirrors London, Manchester Models
Liam Robinson, Chair of Merseytravel, said tap-and-go represents the latest investment in making the transport network fit for the future. The approach follows Transport for London's 2014 contactless rollout, which generated over 1 million daily contactless trips within its first year. Transport for Greater Manchester added contactless to its Metrolink tram system in 2023. Officials didn't provide details on how many validators were installed across Merseyrail's network.

Available Immediately Across Network
The contactless system went live Tuesday across all Merseyrail stations. Rotheram said the technology makes traveling on Merseyrail as simple as using contactless payments in shops. Officials said the system works with any contactless-enabled payment card or mobile device. The agency hasn't released information about whether the system includes fare capping for frequent riders.
Streamlines Boarding for Daily Commuters
Heath said the change benefits both daily commuters and occasional travelers who can now simply tap and go without queuing for tickets or finding correct change. Officials said the system's designed to encourage more people to choose public transport. Riders can check real-time service information and plan trips using Moovit, which provides updates for Merseyrail routes throughout the Liverpool City Region.
