Yarra Trams Adds Sunflower Scheme for Hidden Disabilities

Melbourne tram riders with hidden disabilities can now get easier assistance through a new support program. Yarra Trams launched the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme on December 1, partnering with the international initiative to help passengers who need support that isn't immediately visible. Nearly 200 team members have been trained to recognize and assist riders wearing sunflower lanyards or badges, which signal they may need extra help navigating the system.

Why Hidden Disabilities Need Special Support

Hidden disabilities—including autism, anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and cognitive conditions—often make it difficult for people to receive assistance or understanding when they need it most. Unlike visible disabilities, these conditions aren't immediately apparent to transit staff or other passengers. Yarra Trams recognized this gap as both a challenge for passengers trying to use public transit and an opportunity to make the network more inclusive. The sunflower symbol has become an internationally recognized sign that someone may need additional patience, time, or assistance.

Training Delivered by People with Lived Experience

The training program was delivered in small groups by people with lived experience of hidden disabilities, in collaboration with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect). Customer Service Employees, Authorised Officers, and operational staff participated in sessions designed to equip front-line teams with skills to recognize and assist passengers with hidden disabilities. Ibrahim Elsoukmani, Yarra Trams' Inclusive Passenger Network Advisor, said the initiative enables people with hidden disabilities to travel while raising awareness among staff and the community. Employees who completed the training wear sunflower badges so passengers know they can approach them for help.

How Passengers Can Identify Trained Staff

Passengers can now identify trained staff members by their sunflower pins displayed on uniforms. The distinctive sunflower symbol makes it easy for riders who need assistance to spot employees equipped to help them. Officials didn't specify whether additional training sessions are planned or how many total staff members will eventually participate in the program.

Making Melbourne Trams More Accessible

The partnership demonstrates Yarra Trams' commitment to inclusive and accessible public transportation for all passengers. Riders with hidden disabilities can now travel with greater confidence knowing trained staff are available to assist them. Moovit provides real-time updates and service information for Yarra Trams routes throughout Melbourne, helping all passengers plan their journeys.
