Melbourne Trams Adjust Routes for City Rally
Four Melbourne tram routes suspended or rerouted May 5 for downtown rally event
Melbourne Trams Reroute for City Rally May 5
Melbourne's Yarra Trams will suspend and reroute four city tram lines Tuesday due to a downtown rally, transit officials said. Route 30 service will halt completely starting at 10am May 5, while routes 35, 86, and 96 will operate on modified paths through the city center. The changes affect trams serving key stops between Docklands and Melbourne Museum, with officials advising riders to expect delays and use alternative routes.

Rally Forces Route Modifications
The service modifications stem from a rally scheduled in Melbourne's city center, according to Yarra Trams. Transit agencies typically suspend or reroute service when large public gatherings occupy downtown streets to ensure public safety and manage traffic flow. Officials said the changes will remain in effect for the duration of the rally, though a specific end time wasn't provided. The modifications affect some of Melbourne's busiest tram corridors, including routes that connect Docklands to the central business district and cultural attractions.
Four Routes See Service Changes
Route 30 trams won't operate during the disruption period, with passengers directed to use Route 86a and Route 96a trams on La Trobe Street between Spencer Street and Melbourne Museum as alternatives. Route 35 City Circle trams will run between Docklands and Stop 6 Russell Street via Harbour Esplanade and Flinders Street. Route 86 will divert via La Trobe Street between Stop D1 Docklands Stadium and Stop 11 Melbourne Museum when Bourke Street is affected. Route 96 will also use La Trobe Street between Stop 122 Southern Cross Station and Stop 11 Melbourne Museum. Limited shuttle services will operate as Route 86a between Stop 4 Queen Street and Central Pier, Docklands.

Changes Begin Tuesday Morning
The service modifications take effect Tuesday, May 5, 2026, starting at 10am, officials confirmed. Yarra Trams will provide service updates through tramTRACKER, X, and live announcements to trams and stops throughout the disruption period. Officials didn't specify when normal service will resume, though rally-related disruptions typically last several hours depending on event size and crowd dispersal.
Riders Urged to Plan Ahead
Passengers should allow extra travel time and consider alternative options including City Loop trains and bus services along Lonsdale Street, transit officials said. The changes affect major corridors connecting residential areas to downtown employment centers and tourist destinations. Riders can check Moovit for real-time updates on tram locations and alternative route options during the service modifications. Officials said detailed journey planning information is available before travel to help riders navigate the temporary changes.
