Melbourne Trams Adjust for Sunday Rally
Nine Melbourne tram routes face diversions and closures Sunday from 12:30pm to 2:30pm
Melbourne Rally Disrupts Trams Sunday
Melbourne tram riders should expect significant service changes Sunday afternoon as a city rally forces route diversions and closures. Yarra Trams announced disruptions affecting multiple routes from 12:30pm to 2:30pm on May 3, with some changes starting at 1pm. At least nine routes will see service modifications, with several key city corridors closed to tram traffic during the two-hour window.
Rally Forces Major Route Changes
The service modifications stem from a rally taking place in Melbourne's central business district, according to Yarra Trams. Officials said the changes are necessary to accommodate the event while maintaining safe operations. The disruptions will affect major corridors including Swanston Street, La Trobe Street, and Bourke Street, requiring passengers to use alternative routes or modes of transport. Transit agencies typically implement such changes for large public gatherings to ensure both rider safety and event access.

Nine Routes Face Closures and Detours
Routes 3, 64, and 67 won't run between Stop 20 Anzac Station and Melbourne University, diverting via Park Street, Kings Way, and William Street to Stop 7 Flagstaff Station. When Swanston Street is affected, Routes 1 and 6 won't operate between Stop 7 RMIT University and Stop 11 Collins Street, while Routes 5, 16, and 72 won't run between Stop 11 Collins Street and Melbourne University. Route 30 service on La Trobe Street will be suspended entirely, with passengers advised to use Routes 86a and 96a as alternatives. Route 35 City Circle trams will run a modified route between Docklands and Stop 6 Russell St via Harbour Esplanade and Flinders Street.
Limited Service Window Planned
The disruptions will begin at 12:30pm Sunday, with some route changes taking effect at 1pm, Yarra Trams said. Service is expected to return to normal by 2:30pm, giving the rally a two-hour window in the city center. Routes 86 and 96 will divert via La Trobe Street when Bourke Street is affected, with limited shuttle services available during the disruption period.

Riders Urged to Use Alternative Transport
Passengers are encouraged to use City Loop trains and bus services along Lonsdale Street as alternatives during the disruption window, officials said. Yarra Trams advised riders to allow extra travel time and expect crowding on alternative services.
