Melbourne Trams Reroute for Anzac Day Events

Melbourne's tram riders will face widespread service changes on Anzac Day 2026 as 21 routes adjust for commemorative events, transit officials said. Yarra Trams will implement diversions and suspensions affecting routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 11, 12, 16, 19, 35, 48, 57, 58, 59, 64, 67, 70, 72, 75, 86, 96, and 109 from first service until 1:45pm on Saturday, April 25. The changes accommodate the Anzac Day Commemorative March and Dawn Service, with road closures blocking key city center corridors.

Road Closures Drive Network-Wide Disruptions

The service modifications stem from road closures required for the march route and Dawn Service attendance, according to Yarra Trams. Swanston Street and St Kilda Road will see the most extensive closures, blocking tram operations between Melbourne Central Station and Anzac Station for the full disruption period. Collins Street and Flinders Street will also experience partial closures, forcing route diversions across the network. Transit agencies typically implement such changes annually for Anzac Day commemorations, which draw thousands of attendees to Melbourne's city center.

Three Major Corridors Close to Tram Traffic

Collins Street will have no trams running between Stop 5 Elizabeth St and Stop 7 101 Collins St from first tram to 12:30pm, officials said. Flinders Street will see no service between Stop 2 Melbourne Aquarium and Stop 6 Russell St from first tram to 1pm. The most significant disruption will occur on Swanston Street and St Kilda Road, with no trams running between Stop 8 Melbourne Central Station and Stop 20 Anzac Station from first tram to 1:45pm. Officials didn't specify which of the 21 affected routes will experience diversions versus complete suspensions on specific segments.

Extra Early Service Starts at 4:15am

Extra tram services will operate from 4:15am to help passengers attend the Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance, arriving by 5:45am, according to Yarra Trams. Normal service patterns will resume across the network by 1:45pm as road closures lift and march activities conclude. Travellers Aid will assist passengers from 4:30am to 1pm, with a break during the Dawn Service between 5:30am and 6:30am.

Accessibility Options Available During Closures

Riders with mobility needs can access minibus shuttles and wheelchair support between key locations during the service disruptions, officials said. Passengers requiring taxi services between closed stops can call Transport Victoria on 1800 800 007. Yarra Trams advised riders to plan extra travel time and check for updates before traveling on April 25.
