Two Route 58 tram stops on Kings Way close until June 2026 for infrastructure work
Route 58 Tram Stops Close on Kings Way
Two Route 58 tram stops on Kings Way in Melbourne closed Saturday, July 27, Yarra Trams announced. Stop 117 York St/Kings Way toward West Coburg and Stop 118 Sturt St/Kings Way toward Toorak won't reopen until June 30, 2026. The closures affect passengers in both directions, though alternative stops remain available within a 5-minute walk.

Infrastructure Work Drives Long-Term Closure
The stop closures are part of ongoing infrastructure work in the Kings Way area, according to Yarra Trams. The nearly two-year closure period suggests substantial construction or upgrades are planned for the corridor. Officials didn't specify what type of infrastructure work is being conducted or whether it involves track replacement, utility work, or other improvements. Transit agencies typically close stops for extended periods when construction makes access unsafe or when platforms require rebuilding.
Alternative Stops Within 170 Meters
Passengers traveling toward West Coburg should use Stop 118 Sturt St/Kings Way, which requires up to a 5-minute walk via pedestrian crossing, Yarra Trams said. Those heading toward Toorak should use Stop 117 York St/Kings Way, also requiring up to a 5-minute walk. The alternative stops are approximately 170 meters from the closed locations. Route 58 continues to operate and service the unaffected stops in opposite directions, officials confirmed.
Closure Remains Until Mid-2026
The stop closures will remain in place until Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Yarra Trams said. Officials didn't provide interim milestones or indicate whether the timeline could change based on construction progress. The agency announced the closures took effect Saturday, July 27, 2024, giving the project a duration of nearly 23 months.

Riders Should Plan Extra Travel Time
Passengers are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for the short walk to alternative stops, according to Yarra Trams. The 5-minute walk and pedestrian crossing add time to trips for riders who previously used the closed stops. Moovit provides real-time Route 58 updates and can help passengers locate the nearest alternative stops during the closure period.
