Melbourne Adds Pride Tram to Network
Rainbow-wrapped Pride Tram designed by local artist to run on Melbourne routes through 2023
Yarra Trams Adds Pride Tram to Melbourne Network
Melbourne riders can now spot a rainbow-wrapped tram rolling through the city after Yarra Trams unveiled its #AllAboard Pride Tram at Brunswick Depot. The D1-Class tram features artwork by local Victorian artist Marco Pennacchia, who won a state-wide design competition following a public vote. It's the first time a tram's been designed by a local artist through such a competition, officials said.

Context
The competition was organized in partnership with JOY Media and supported by Midsumma Festival, according to Yarra Trams. The initiative represents Keolis Downer's commitment to diversity and inclusion across Melbourne's transit network. Acting Chief Executive Adele McCarthy said the tram serves as a visible symbol that everyone's welcome on Melbourne's trams. The colorful mural aims to spread a message of inclusion and support for the city's rainbow communities, officials said.
Service Details
The Pride Tram will operate across routes 5, 6, 16, and 72 for the remainder of 2022 and most of 2023, Yarra Trams confirmed. These routes serve key corridors throughout Melbourne's inner suburbs and CBD. The tram entered regular passenger service following the unveiling ceremony at Brunswick Depot. Officials said the artwork's intended to bring joy and pride to Melbourne's rainbow communities whenever they see it traveling through the city.

Launch Event
The launch event at Brunswick Depot was attended by winning artist Marco Pennacchia and Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Josh Bull MP, along with other special guests. Pennacchia's design was selected through a public vote in the 2023 competition. Officials didn't specify how many entries the competition received or detailed vote totals. The newly wrapped tram marks a milestone for community-designed transit vehicles in Victoria.
Rider Impact
Riders on routes 5, 6, 16, and 72 will encounter the Pride Tram throughout its service period, though officials haven't said whether it'll operate on a fixed schedule or rotate across the routes. The tram operates as a regular passenger vehicle with standard fares and service patterns. Moovit provides real-time tracking for all Yarra Trams routes, helping riders plan trips and locate specific vehicles across Melbourne's network.
