MBTA Green Line C Branch Shuts Down for 12 Days

Boston's MBTA will suspend Green Line C branch service between Kenmore and Cleveland Circle for 12 consecutive days starting May 6, the transit agency announced. The closure runs through May 17 and affects one of the system's busiest light rail branches. Free shuttle buses will replace train service during the shutdown, though riders should expect at least 15 extra minutes of travel time.

Safety System Installation Drives Closure

The suspension allows crews to install critical Green Line Train Protection System infrastructure, according to the MBTA. The GLTPS combines vehicle and wayside equipment to prevent train-on-train collisions and incorporates speed enforcement features. Transit officials first announced the closure on April 16, giving riders several weeks' notice. The system represents a significant safety upgrade for Boston's century-old light rail network, which serves more than 100,000 daily riders across its four branches.

Three Stations Won't Get Shuttle Service

Replacement shuttle buses will serve most C branch stops between Kenmore and Cleveland Circle, but three stations won't have direct shuttle access. Saint Mary's Street, Kent Street, and Brandon Hall stations will be bypassed in both directions, transit officials said. Riders using those stops should walk to the nearest serviced station instead. The MBTA will add extra service on the parallel Green Line D branch during the closure. Passengers traveling to or from Cleveland Circle can use Reservoir station on the D branch, located just 0.1 miles away.

Closure Runs Through Mid-May

The service suspension takes effect Tuesday, May 6, and continues through Saturday, May 17. Transit Ambassadors and MBTA staff will be stationed at affected stops to help riders navigate the changes and answer questions. The 12-day window allows contractors to complete infrastructure work while minimizing disruption to weekday commuters by spanning two weekends.

Riders Face Extended Commute Times

Passengers using shuttle bus service should budget at least 15 additional minutes beyond their regular commute, according to the MBTA. The agency encourages riders to consider alternative routes, including the nearby D branch service at Reservoir. Transit Ambassadors will be available on-site throughout the closure to provide assistance.
