MBTA Offers Free Friday Commuter Rail Rides

Boston-area commuters can ride the MBTA Commuter Rail free every Friday this summer, transit officials announced Monday. Governor Maura Healey unveiled the promotion at North Station, part of a broader package of summer discounts designed to boost ridership and ease transportation costs. The free Friday service runs through June, July, and August on all Commuter Rail lines.

Summer Discounts Target Cost-Conscious Riders

The promotions come as transit agencies nationwide seek to rebuild ridership following pandemic-era declines. Monthly Commuter Rail passes for summer will be offered at half price, potentially saving riders between $321 and $639 depending on their zone, according to the MBTA. Public transportation advocates like TransitMatters support the initiative as a way to boost ridership and remind commuters of their transit options. The discounts apply to Zones 1 through 10, Interzones 1 through 10, and Commuter Ferry passes.

Expanded Weekend Benefits for Pass Holders

Monthly pass holders will receive expanded weekend travel privileges beyond the standard fare discounts. Pass holders can travel to any zone on weekends regardless of their regular zone designation, officials said. Additionally, monthly pass holders can bring a companion on weekend trips for just $1 per day. The free Friday service includes holidays like Juneteenth and July 3. Zone 1A passes aren't eligible for the half-price discount.

Promotions Begin With Summer Season

The summer promotions take effect with the start of June and run through the end of August, officials said. Governor Healey announced the deals Monday morning at North Station. The MBTA didn't specify whether similar promotions might continue beyond summer or become a permanent offering. Officials said the goal is encouraging public transit use during the busy summer season.

Special Event Trains Excluded From Deals

The promotions don't apply to special event trains to Foxboro, including World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium. The MBTA is preparing to transport 20,000 passengers per World Cup match on 14 special trains, with tickets costing up to $75 or more.
