MBTA Offers 50% Off Summer Commuter Rail Fares
MBTA offers 50% monthly pass discounts and free Friday rides on Commuter Rail through August
MBTA Cuts Commuter Rail Fares 50% for Summer
Massachusetts commuters will see significant savings on MBTA Commuter Rail trips this summer through four fare promotions announced Monday. Governor Maura Healey unveiled the discounts at North Station, saying monthly passholders will save between $321 and $639 depending on their route. The promotions run through June, July, and August during a busy season of major events across the state.

Summer Promotions Target Congestion Relief
The fare reductions aim to encourage public transportation use during increased travel periods and offset impacts from temporary schedule changes related to the FIFA World Cup, officials said. Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll and Interim Transportation Secretary Phil Eng joined Healey for the announcement. The initiative provides an affordable alternative to driving while supporting daily commuters during a season when Massachusetts hosts major events. Transit officials said the promotions will help reduce congestion on roads leading into Boston and other destinations served by Commuter Rail.
Four Discounts Include Free Fridays
The summer promotions include Free Fridays, when all Commuter Rail trips won't require payment, according to the MBTA. Monthly passes will be discounted 50% for the three-month period. The agency's also expanding weekend travel options for monthly pass holders and offering a $1 'Summer Companion' fare on weekends for passholders traveling with another rider. Officials said the discounts represent significant savings compared to standard fares, particularly for riders on longer routes where monthly passes typically cost more.
Schedule Changes Accommodate World Cup
The MBTA will adjust Commuter Rail schedules in June and July to accommodate up to 20,000 passengers on 14 trains per match day to Boston Stadium for FIFA World Cup games, officials said. The fare promotions are designed to offset any inconvenience from the temporary schedule modifications. Transportation Secretary Eng said the agency's working to balance special event service with regular commuter needs during the tournament.

Riders Can Track Summer Service Changes
The administration emphasized making public transportation easier and more affordable for regular commuters, residents, and visitors enjoying summer events across Massachusetts. Officials said the combination of fare discounts and adjusted schedules will help manage increased ridership during the busy season. Riders can track real-time Commuter Rail updates and plan trips using Moovit, which provides current schedule information and service alerts for all MBTA routes throughout the summer promotion period.
