MBTA Advances Infrastructure With April Upgrades
MBTA schedules April service cuts on Red, Green, and Commuter Rail lines for infrastructure work
MBTA Plans April Service Cuts for Upgrades
Boston-area transit riders will face widespread service disruptions in April as the MBTA implements multiple infrastructure improvement projects, officials announced. The changes affect Red Line, Green Line, and several Commuter Rail lines throughout the month, with some suspensions lasting up to nine days. Officials said the work includes signal modernization, train protection system installation, and overhead wire replacement across the system.

Multiple Projects Drive Service Changes
The April service modifications support four major infrastructure initiatives: Columbia Junction Signal Modernization on the Red Line, Green Line improvements including train protection system installation, the North Station Terminal Area Signal System Improvement Project affecting northside Commuter Rail lines, and Old Colony Line system maintenance. Transit officials said the projects aim to ensure long-term infrastructure stability and improve system reliability. The work requires extended service suspensions because crews need continuous access to tracks, signals, and overhead wires. Officials said completing the projects during concentrated periods minimizes overall disruption compared to intermittent weekend work over several months.
Green Line Faces Longest Suspension
The Green Line B branch will experience a nine-day service suspension between Kenmore and Boston College from April 22-30, the longest single disruption period. During the weekend of April 25-26, Green Line service will be suspended between Copley and Boston College (B branch), St. Mary's (C branch), and Brookline Hills (D branch). Free shuttle buses will replace service during all Green Line suspensions, and the MBTA will offer free Worcester Line Commuter Rail service as an alternative during the April 25-26 weekend. Officials said riders should budget additional travel time ranging from 10 to 70 minutes depending on their route and transfer points.
Commuter Rail Suspensions Span Multiple Weekends
Northside Commuter Rail lines including Fitchburg, Haverhill, Lowell, and Newburyport/Rockport will have service suspensions for three days (April 10-12) and four days (April 24-27) due to signal system improvements at North Station. Old Colony Lines including New Bedford/Fall River, Greenbush, and Kingston will have weekend service suspensions on April 11-12, 18-19, and 25-26 between South Station and Braintree. Officials said Red Line and Orange Line connections will be available at various stations as alternatives during Commuter Rail suspensions.

Riders Face Extended Travel Times
Transit officials encouraged riders to use alternative subway services where available and plan for significantly longer trips during the April service changes. Free shuttle buses will operate during most service suspensions, though the MBTA warned that additional travel time could range from 10 to 70 minutes depending on the affected route. Red Line riders should be aware of ongoing phased service changes related to signal modernization work at Columbia Junction near JFK/UMass station, though officials didn't specify exact service patterns.
