Mayo Buses Add Contactless Payment Options
Riders on TFI Local Link Mayo buses can now tap their bank cards or phones to pay fares, Transport for Ireland announced. The contactless payment system launched February 9 across all Local Link Mayo services, accepting debit cards, credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. The upgrade follows successful pilot programs in five other Irish counties, though officials didn't specify how many riders participated in those trials.

Part of National Modernization Effort
The National Transport Authority's implementing the contactless system as part of a broader initiative to modernize fare payment across Ireland's public transport network. Rural and regional bus services have historically relied on cash and prepaid cards, creating barriers for occasional riders who don't carry exact change or maintain Leap card balances. The expansion to Mayo represents a significant step in bringing urban payment conveniences to rural communities, where public transport options are more limited and riders may travel less frequently.
Single-Journey Fares Only
The contactless option works exclusively for single-journey fares, officials said. Passengers seeking daily or weekly passes must still purchase them through the Leap website or TFI Leap Top-up App, as those products aren't available through contactless terminals. Traditional payment methods remain fully operational—riders can continue using TFI Leap cards, cash, or Free Travel Cards. Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager, called the launch "a significant milestone for rural transport in Mayo," though he didn't provide ridership projections or usage targets for the new system.

Rollout Timeline and Expansion
The February 9 launch date followed pilot programs in Cavan, Monaghan, Tipperary, Laois, and Offaly, though officials haven't said when those trials began or how long they lasted. The National Transport Authority didn't announce which counties will receive contactless payments next or provide a timeline for completing the national rollout. Sarah Togher, TFI Local Link Mayo General Manager, said the system makes it "easier for passengers to travel sustainably" by removing payment friction.
What Riders Need to Know
Passengers can board any Local Link Mayo bus and tap their contactless-enabled bank card or smartphone at the payment terminal near the driver. The system processes single fares instantly, eliminating the need for exact change. Riders who prefer traditional methods can continue paying with cash, Leap cards, or Free Travel Cards without any changes to those processes. Moovit provides real-time arrival information and route planning for TFI Local Link Mayo services throughout County Mayo.
