M22 Stops Shift to Improve Kensington Access
Two M22 bus stops on University Boulevard in Kensington close or relocate May 6
M22 Bus Stops Close, Relocate on University Blvd
Two northbound M22 bus stops on University Boulevard in Kensington will permanently change starting May 6, transit officials said. WMATA announced Wednesday that one stop will close while another relocates as part of construction by the Town of Kensington. The changes affect riders traveling northbound on the M22 route through the University Boulevard corridor.

Town Partnership Drives Infrastructure Upgrade
The modifications stem from a partnership between WMATA and the Town of Kensington to improve bus stop facilities along University Boulevard. Local municipalities often work with transit agencies to upgrade stop infrastructure, including adding shelters, improving accessibility, and enhancing safety features. The Town of Kensington is constructing a new bus stop to replace the existing facility at Lexington Street. Officials said the project aims to provide better amenities for M22 riders in the area.
One Stop Closes, Another Shifts Position
The northbound stop at University Blvd at Lexington St, designated as stop #2005556, will permanently close May 6. Meanwhile, the northbound stop at University Blvd at Decatur Ave, stop #2005554, will relocate from the far side of the intersection to the near side. Riders will board and exit at the new Decatur Avenue location between the fire hydrant and utility pole. The advisory remains in effect through July 6, 2026, though officials didn't specify whether additional changes might occur during that period.

Changes Take Effect in Early May
Both modifications take effect Wednesday, May 6, 2026, according to WMATA. The agency typically posts signage at affected stops several weeks before permanent changes, directing riders to alternate boarding locations. Officials said passengers should allow extra time for their commutes as they adjust to the new stop configurations.
Riders Should Plan for New Boarding Locations
M22 riders who regularly use either affected stop should identify their new boarding location before May 6. Those who used the Lexington Street stop will need to walk to the nearest alternate stop, though officials didn't specify which stop that would be. Passengers can check Moovit for real-time M22 bus locations and updated stop information as the changes take effect.
