M22 Stops Shift for Kensington Infrastructure Upgrade
M22 bus stops at Lexington Street and Decatur Avenue relocate May 6 due to construction
M22 Bus Stops Close, Relocate on University Blvd
M22 bus riders in Kensington will see permanent changes to two northbound stops on University Boulevard starting May 6. WMATA announced the modifications, which include one stop closure and one relocation, as part of construction by the Town of Kensington. The changes affect stops at Lexington Street and Decatur Avenue.

Town Partnership Drives Infrastructure Upgrade
The stop changes stem from a partnership between WMATA and the Town of Kensington to improve bus stop facilities along the University Boulevard corridor. Local municipalities often work with transit agencies to upgrade infrastructure, including adding shelters, improving accessibility, and relocating stops to safer or more convenient locations. The Town of Kensington is constructing a new bus stop facility that necessitates the closure of the existing Lexington Street stop. Officials said the improvements aim to enhance the rider experience and meet current accessibility standards.
Two Stops Affected by Permanent Changes
The northbound stop at University Boulevard and Lexington Street (stop ID #2005556) will permanently close on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The northbound stop at University Boulevard and Decatur Avenue (stop ID #2005554) will be permanently relocated from the far side of the intersection to the near side. Riders will board and exit at the new Decatur Avenue location between the fire hydrant and utility pole. WMATA didn't specify whether the Lexington Street stop will be replaced with a new facility at a different location or if riders should use alternative nearby stops.

Changes Take Effect in Early May
The stop closure and relocation take effect May 6, 2026, with the advisory period running through July 6, 2026. WMATA typically maintains advisory periods beyond implementation dates to ensure riders have adjusted to changes and to address any operational issues that arise. Officials didn't say whether additional construction work will continue beyond the initial May 6 date or if the July timeline accounts for a transition period.
Riders Should Plan for New Stop Locations
M22 riders who regularly use the affected stops should plan their trips accounting for the new stop locations starting May 6. Those who previously boarded at Lexington Street will need to use alternative stops along the route. Riders using the Decatur Avenue stop should look for the relocated boarding area on the near side of the intersection.
