Lake District Rail-Bus Ticket Now Year-Round
Lake District's combined rail-bus ticket to Keswick becomes permanent after trial
Lake District Rail-Bus Ticket Goes Year-Round
Visitors to England's Lake District can now use a single ticket covering both train and bus service to Keswick throughout the year. Avanti West Coast made the integrated ticket permanent starting April 27 after a two-year summer trial showed record ridership growth. The rail operator saw Penrith station journeys jump 17% during summer 2025, totaling 205,000 trips.

Context
The integrated ticketing creates what Avanti West Coast calls a "virtual railway station" at Keswick, which doesn't have direct rail service. The initiative addresses a common barrier to car-free tourism in rural areas where visitors must navigate separate ticketing systems for trains and buses. Rail travel to the Lake District region increased from 7% to 12% of all visitors between 2022 and 2025, according to Cumbria Tourism research. The collaboration supports the region's Destination Management Plan, which prioritizes sustainable tourism and reduced traffic congestion in the popular national park.
Service Details
The single ticket covers rail travel to Penrith station and connecting Stagecoach bus services on routes X4 and X5 to Keswick. During the April-November 2025 season, Stagecoach buses carried nearly 442,000 passengers on these routes, representing 14% growth over 2023. TransPennine Express, which also serves Penrith, recorded 115,000 summer journeys in 2025, up 58% from 2019 levels. The combined rail and bus ridership demonstrates growing demand for integrated public transport options to the Lake District.
Implementation
The year-round service launched April 27, 2026, expanding beyond the previous summer-only availability. Avanti West Coast and partners tested the integrated ticket during summers 2024 and 2025 before making it permanent. The initiative is part of the 'Let's Go Car Free' campaign, a collaboration between Avanti West Coast, TransPennine Express, Stagecoach, and Cumbria Tourism promoting sustainable travel to the region.

Rider Impact
The permanent integrated ticket eliminates the need for visitors to purchase separate rail and bus tickets or coordinate different booking systems. Travelers can plan car-free trips to Keswick knowing single-ticket service is available year-round rather than only during peak summer months. The initiative supports Avanti West Coast's goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2031. Moovit provides real-time updates for rail and bus connections serving the Lake District region.
