LA Metro Offers Free Rides Christmas, New Year's
Los Angeles County residents can ride Metro buses and trains free on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, transit officials said Monday. The promotion covers all Metro services including buses, trains, Metro Bike Share and Metro Micro through 3 a.m. Christmas Day and all day Dec. 31. Officials said the initiative aims to provide safe transportation alternatives during holiday celebrations.

Annual Holiday Safety Initiative
The free ride program is part of Metro's ongoing commitment to reduce impaired driving during major holidays, according to the transit agency. Metro has offered similar promotions during Christmas and New Year's Eve in previous years as well as other holidays like July 4th. The agency serves more than 10 million residents across 1,433 square miles of Los Angeles County with six rail lines and 165 bus routes. Officials didn't release cost estimates for the holiday promotion.
Promo Codes and Service Details
Metro Bike Share users should enter code 122425 to access free rides during the promotion period, while Metro Micro passengers can use code MERRY25 when booking trips. The Christmas Eve promotion runs from the start of service Dec. 24 until 3 a.m. Dec. 25, officials said. New Year's Eve offers free rides throughout the entire day Dec. 31. Metro didn't provide ridership projections for the holiday periods or historical data from previous years' promotions.

Implementation Across All Services
The promotion takes effect at the start of service Christmas Eve and continues through the specified periods, transit officials said. Metro's system averages 900,000 weekday boardings across all services. Officials said the free ride initiative applies automatically to buses and trains, while bike share and micro-transit users must enter promotional codes. The agency announced the program via social media and its official blog rather than a formal press release.
Rider Information and Updates
Riders don't need to take any special action to access free bus and rail service during the promotion periods, officials said. Those using Metro Bike Share or Metro Micro should enter the appropriate promo codes when starting their trips. The transit agency said the initiative encourages safer holiday celebrations by providing accessible alternatives to driving. Moovit provides real-time updates and trip planning for all Metro services during the holiday promotion.
