LA Metro Holds Ridership at 900,000 Daily Trips
LA Metro's maintaining approximately 900,000 average weekday boardings despite regional challenges, transit officials said Tuesday. The system's reached about 75% of pre-pandemic ridership levels, with rail services and weekend travel driving growth. Stephanie Wiggins, Chief Executive Officer, said the numbers reflect confidence that Angelenos have in Metro as a reliable transportation option.
The stable ridership comes as many U.S. transit systems still struggle to reach 70% of 2019 levels, according to Metro's announcement. Rail services are showing year-over-year growth, aligning with national patterns where rail systems recover faster than bus networks. Weekend travel has increased notably, though officials didn't provide specific percentage gains. The shift suggests Metro's successfully serving leisure travelers alongside traditional weekday commuters.

Enhanced safety measures have contributed to rider confidence across the system, officials said. Janice Hahn, Board Chair, told reporters the ridership numbers are a testament to investments made in safety and service quality. When people feel safe and see reliable service, they choose public transportation, Hahn said. Specific costs for safety improvements weren't available in Tuesday's announcement.
The ridership data reflects October 2025 travel patterns, according to Metro's November 5 announcement. Officials said the 900,000 average weekday boardings represent sustained stability rather than a one-time spike. Dave Sotero, Director of Media Relations, confirmed the figures in the agency's official statement. Metro didn't provide projections for future ridership growth or specific targets for reaching pre-pandemic levels.

Riders can expect continued focus on safety and service reliability as Metro works to build on current ridership levels. The growth in rail and weekend travel shows the system's meeting diverse community needs, Wiggins said. Officials said they'll continue monitoring ridership patterns to adjust services accordingly.
