LA Metro D Line Extension Nears Completion
LA Metro's D Line extension reaches 98% completion with three new Westside stations opening in 2027
LA Metro D Line Extension Reaches 98% Complete
LA Metro's D Line Extension Section 1 has reached 98% completion, bringing three new subway stations closer to opening in the Westside area. The 3.9-mile extension will connect commuters from Wilshire/Western to key destinations including UCLA and Westwood, transit officials said in November 2025. The project's expected to open in 2027, though Metro hasn't announced a specific date for passenger service.
Extension Part of Decades-Long Transit Expansion
The D Line extension represents a major step in LA County's effort to expand subway access across the region. Voters approved funding for the project through Measure J in 2012 and Measure M in 2016, with 71% supporting the accelerated timeline. The extension's part of a $9 billion multi-section project that'll eventually stretch the D Line approximately 21 miles from Downtown LA to Westwood/VA Hospital. Metro hasn't released the specific budget allocated to Section 1 separately from the overall project cost.
Final Work Includes Station Finishes and Testing
The remaining 2% of work includes final station finishes, systems testing, and preparation for passenger service, according to Metro's official announcement. Crews are completing installation of fixtures, signage, and safety systems at the three new stations. The agency's conducting extensive testing of track systems, power infrastructure, and communications equipment before trains can carry passengers. Metro hasn't disclosed specific ridership projections for Section 1, though the extension's expected to significantly reduce travel times for Westside commuters.
Opening Expected in 2027 Without Firm Date
Metro expects the extension to open in 2027 but hasn't set a specific date for the start of passenger service. The agency typically announces opening dates several months in advance after completing safety certification and operator training. Officials said they'll release more details as the project moves through final testing phases.
New Stations to Serve Westside Destinations
The three new stations will provide direct subway access to areas previously served only by bus routes, reducing commute times for thousands of daily riders. Commuters heading to UCLA, medical facilities, and business districts along the Westside corridor will benefit from the expanded service.
