LA Metro D Line Extension 98% Done, Opening Soon
LA Metro's 3.9-mile D Line extension reaches 98% completion with three new stations
LA Metro D Line Extension Reaches 98% Complete
Los Angeles Metro's D Line Extension Section 1 has reached 98% completion, bringing three new subway stations closer to opening along Wilshire Boulevard. The 3.9-mile extension will connect Wilshire/Western Station westward to new stops at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, and Wilshire/La Cienega, transit officials said. Metro hasn't announced a specific opening date, though the project was originally targeted for early 2025.

Decade-Long Construction Project Nearing Finish
Construction on the extension began in September 2014, making this an 11-year project to expand Metro's subway network westward. The $1.42 billion extension is part of Metro's broader effort to build out rail transit across Los Angeles County, funded by voter-approved Measure M and Measure R. Officials said the extension will provide more sustainable transportation alternatives along the heavily traveled Wilshire corridor. Specific ridership projections for the new stations weren't available.
Three New Stations to Serve Wilshire Corridor
The extension adds three stations along a 3.9-mile stretch of Wilshire Boulevard, one of Los Angeles's busiest corridors. Metro hasn't specified what work remains in the final 2% of the project. The extension connects to the existing D Line, which currently runs from Union Station to Wilshire/Western. Officials said Section 1 is the first phase of a larger plan to eventually extend the D Line to the VA Hospital in Westwood, though timelines for future sections weren't provided.

Opening Timeline Remains Unclear
Metro originally targeted an early 2025 opening for the extension, but that timeframe has passed with the project at 98% completion as of September 2025. Officials haven't provided an updated timeline for when service will begin. The agency typically conducts extensive testing and certification before opening new rail lines. Metro announced the milestone through its official blog but didn't include statements from agency leadership about the remaining work or expected opening date.
New Stations to Improve Westside Access
The three new stations will provide improved transit access to neighborhoods and destinations along the Wilshire corridor, including the Miracle Mile and Fairfax districts. Officials said the extension will offer commuters an alternative to driving on congested Wilshire Boulevard. Riders can track real-time updates and plan trips on the extended D Line through Moovit once service begins. Metro hasn't released details about initial service frequencies or operating hours for the new stations.
