LA Metro A Line Adds 9.1 Miles to Pomona Sept. 19

Los Angeles County residents in four eastern cities will gain direct rail access when Metro's A Line extension opens Friday, September 19. Metro Board Chair Fernando Dutra announced the opening date Wednesday for the 9.1-mile expansion that'll add stations in Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and Pomona. The extension marks the first time these communities will connect directly to Metro's rail network, officials said.
The extension continues Metro's phased expansion into eastern Los Angeles County that began with the 2016 opening of the Azusa segment. That previous extension added 11.5 miles and six stations to what was then called the Gold Line before Metro rebranded it as the A Line in 2019. Construction on the Glendora-to-Pomona segment started in 2013 under the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority, representing about 12 years from groundbreaking to service launch. Metro serves approximately 10 million residents across Los Angeles County's 88 cities, according to the agency.
Officials didn't release projected ridership figures for the four new stations or specify how many trains will serve the extended route. The extension will provide connections to employment centers, schools, and destinations throughout the region, transit officials said. Specific service frequencies and operating schedules weren't available in the announcement, though Metro typically releases detailed timetables closer to opening dates. The project was funded through voter-approved Measure M and Measure R sales tax measures that support regional transit expansion.
Metro announced the September 19 opening date July 30, giving riders about seven weeks' notice before service begins. The agency typically provides advance notice for major service changes, though officials didn't specify when detailed schedules and fare information will be released. Construction wrapped up earlier this year after more than a decade of work on the extension.
Riders in Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and Pomona will be able to travel throughout Metro's rail network once the extension opens. The four new stations will connect to the existing A Line that runs from Azusa through Pasadena to downtown Los Angeles and East Los Angeles.
