Hull Adds £7.8M for Bus Shelters, Real-Time Info

Hull's bus riders will see more shelters, digital displays, and frequent service starting April 2026 after the city council approved £7.8 million in government funding. The Local Area Bus Grant covers infrastructure upgrades and service improvements through March 2027, officials confirmed. The investment targets key routes with 10-minute frequencies and supports community services.

Partnership Aims to Boost Ridership

The funding comes from the Government through the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority, which allocated the grant to improve regional transit. Hull City Council will work with Stagecoach East Midlands and East Yorkshire Buses through the Hull Bus Alliance to implement the changes. The investment aims to make bus travel more convenient, reliable, and attractive to passengers across the city. Transit agencies typically use such grants to address infrastructure gaps and service frequency issues that affect ridership growth.

Improvements Target Infrastructure and Service

Key improvements include installing additional bus shelters at stops across Hull and deploying new digital real-time information displays to help riders track arrivals. Service frequency will increase to every 10 minutes on key routes, though officials didn't specify which route numbers will see the enhanced schedules. The funding will also support the Marfleet Community Bus, which operates three days per week serving the Marfleet area. Moving Traffic Violation cameras will be developed for yellow box junctions and bus lanes to improve punctuality by reducing traffic interference.

Specialized Services Continue Through 2027

The grant extends support for specialized transit programs during the funding period. A Young Persons Freedom Pass will continue providing free travel for care leavers under 25, helping young adults access employment and education. The Moorsbus service to North York Moors will run on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays from May to September, connecting Hull residents to the national park. Implementation begins in April 2026 and runs through March 2027.

Riders Can Track Service Changes

The measures are designed to grow passenger numbers and make the city greener and better connected through improved transit access. Officials said the infrastructure and service improvements should make bus travel a more attractive option for daily commutes and leisure trips. Riders can track real-time bus arrivals and service updates through Moovit, which provides current information for Hull's bus network as improvements roll out over the next year.
