GTR Adds £3.2B to UK Economy, Backs 40,000 Jobs
One of Britain's largest rail operators delivers economic benefits far beyond the tracks, a new analysis shows. Govia Thameslink Railway contributed £3.2 billion to the UK economy in 2025 while supporting 40,000 jobs across London and the South East of England, according to a report by Oxford Economics released this week. The company handles nearly one in five passenger journeys nationwide, operating Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern, and Gatwick Express routes.

Major Operator Serves 327 Stations
GTR's network spans 327 stations throughout London and the South East, with the company directly managing 236 of those facilities. The operator is part of the Go-Ahead Group, one of the UK's largest public transport companies, which contributed £6.4 billion to the national economy and supported 86,900 jobs in 2025. The Oxford Economics analysis examined direct employment, supply chain impacts, and spending by workers whose jobs depend on the rail network.
Economic Impact Spans Multiple Sectors
The £3.2 billion economic contribution includes direct operations, payments to suppliers, and wages spent by GTR employees and contractors throughout the region. The 40,000 jobs supported by GTR's operations span roles in rail operations, station management, maintenance, and related supply chain positions. Officials didn't break down the job figures by specific employment categories or geographic distribution within the South East. The company operates apprenticeship schemes and partnerships with Career Returners and The King's Trust to develop workforce talent.

Leadership Emphasizes Regional Growth Role
Angie Doll, Chief Executive Officer of GTR, emphasized the company's vital role in keeping communities connected and supporting local jobs. Patrick Verwer, Chief Executive Officer of Rail at Go-Ahead Group, highlighted the company's impact as a driver of local growth and its commitment to delivering reliable services. The economic impact report was released in 2025, though officials didn't specify the exact publication date or whether the analysis will be updated annually.
Diversity Programs Support Workforce Development
GTR has implemented inclusion programs including a Women's Network group and an LGBTQ+ network to ensure workforce diversity across its 40,000-job footprint. The company's employment initiatives aim to connect job seekers with opportunities in rail operations, maintenance, and customer service roles throughout the London and South East network. Riders can track GTR services including Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern, and Gatwick Express routes through Moovit, which provides real-time updates for all four brands across the 327-station network.
