Greater Miami Launches All-Electric Bus Rapid Transit
Miami-Dade launches Metro Express with 20 electric buses on 20-mile South Dade corridor
Miami-Dade Adds Electric Bus Rapid Transit
Miami-Dade Transit's launched Metro Express, the county's first all-electric Bus Rapid Transit system, on November 5. The service operates 20 electric buses along a 20-mile corridor on the South Dade TransitWay with 14 enhanced stations. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the $100 million project represents the county's commitment to sustainable transportation.

Background
Miami-Dade County approved $100 million for the South Dade TransitWay project in 2019, with construction beginning in 2022. The all-electric BRT system aligns with the county's climate action strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving transit access for South Dade communities. Alice N. Bravo, director of Miami-Dade Transportation and Public Works, said the system delivers modern, efficient service the community deserves. Transit agencies nationwide are increasingly adopting electric buses and BRT systems to reduce emissions and improve service quality.
System Features
The Metro Express operates with dedicated bus lanes, priority traffic signaling, and real-time passenger information at stations. The 20-mile corridor connects communities throughout South Dade with faster, more reliable service than traditional bus routes. Officials said the system includes charging infrastructure to support the all-electric fleet, though the specific number of charging stations wasn't immediately available. The zero-emission buses provide quieter rides while eliminating tailpipe emissions along the corridor.
Implementation
The service became operational November 5 following the completion of infrastructure improvements along the South Dade TransitWay. The county invested in enhanced stations with modern amenities and real-time arrival information for riders. Officials haven't released specific ridership projections for the new service, though the system's designed to serve growing communities in southern Miami-Dade County.
Rider Information
The Metro Express provides faster travel times through South Dade with dedicated lanes and priority signaling at intersections. Riders can access real-time arrival information at the 14 enhanced stations along the route. Moovit provides schedule information and real-time updates for Metro Express and other Miami-Dade Transit routes throughout the county.
