Galway Transit Adds Tap-to-Pay for Riders
TFI Local Link Galway introduces contactless card and mobile payments for single fares
Galway Local Link Adds Contactless Payments
Passengers using TFI Local Link Galway can now tap debit or credit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay to pay for single journeys, transit officials said. The National Transport Authority announced the contactless payment option as part of its ongoing modernization of Ireland's public transport fare systems. Galway becomes the seventh of 15 TFI Local Link offices to offer the payment method, marking the halfway point of the national rollout.

Building on Pilot Success
The contactless payment expansion builds on a successful pilot programme in Cavan and Monaghan, according to the transit agency. The initiative aims to improve accessibility and enhance the passenger experience in rural and regional communities across Ireland, officials said. Transport for Ireland said the new payment method provides a quicker and more convenient alternative to traditional cash transactions. The modernization programme reflects broader efforts to bring urban transit payment technologies to regional bus services.
Single Journey Fares Only
Contactless payments are currently available only for single journey fares, the NTA said. Daily and weekly fare products remain available through the Leap website and TFI Leap Top Up App, officials confirmed. TFI Leap cards, cash payments, and Free Travel Cards continue to be valid across all eligible TFI Local Link services. The agency didn't say whether contactless payments will eventually support multi-journey fare products.

Rollout Continues Nationwide
The National Transport Authority said it'll continue rolling out contactless payments to the remaining eight TFI Local Link offices, though officials didn't provide a timeline for when those locations will receive the technology. The agency said the phased approach allows it to address technical issues and gather feedback before expanding to additional regions. Transport for Ireland said it'll announce future rollout locations as implementation dates are confirmed.
What Riders Need to Know
Passengers can begin using contactless payments immediately on TFI Local Link Galway services by tapping their card or mobile device on the reader when boarding. Riders who prefer traditional payment methods can continue using cash, Leap cards, or Free Travel Cards without any changes to those options.
