Michigan Grants $60K for Worker Transit Programs

Three Michigan businesses will receive $60,000 to help employees get to work more reliably. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity awarded the grants Tuesday through its Reliable Rides Incentive Grant Pilot Program, officials said. Grace Emmanuel Baptist Church of Flint, Manthei Wood Products, and LM Manufacturing will each develop transportation programs to address commuting barriers that keep workers from reaching their jobs.

Transportation Barriers Hurt Workforce Stability

Access to reliable transportation remains a significant employment barrier across Michigan, particularly in areas without robust public transit systems. Stephanie Beckhorn, Deputy Director of LEO's Office of Employment and Training, said transportation challenges prevent many Michiganders from securing and keeping good-paying jobs. The pilot program aims to improve workforce stability by providing dependable commuting options that reduce turnover and expand job access for residents who lack reliable ways to reach employment centers.

Grants Fund 12-Month Transportation Solutions

The three recipient organizations will use the funding to implement new transportation programs over the next 12 months, officials said. Each business received $20,000 to develop solutions tailored to their employees' specific commuting needs. The grants support initiatives that could include vanpool programs, ride-sharing arrangements, or partnerships with local transit providers. Officials said the pilot program will help determine which transportation models work best for Michigan employers facing workforce access challenges.

Program Launches April 1 Implementation

The grant awards took effect April 1, with businesses expected to launch their transportation programs in coming weeks. Officials said the 12-month pilot period will allow LEO to evaluate program effectiveness and identify best practices for addressing workforce transportation barriers. The agency didn't specify whether additional funding rounds are planned after the pilot concludes.

Reliable Commutes Expand Job Opportunities

By providing dependable commuting solutions, the program aims to give more Michigan residents access to quality employment opportunities they couldn't previously reach. Workers in areas with limited public transit options often struggle to maintain consistent work schedules when transportation isn't reliable. Moovit provides real-time transit updates and trip planning for Michigan commuters navigating public transportation and shared ride options to reach their workplaces.
