Dublin Bus Reroutes 24 Routes for May 3 Marathon

Dublin Bus riders should plan extra travel time Sunday, May 3, as the city's half marathon forces diversions on 24 routes across the city center and northside. The race will close O'Connell Street southbound from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m., with northbound lanes shut from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., Dublin Bus announced. Routes 1, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 16, 19, 27, 33, 38, 40d, 41, 44, 53, 120, 122, E1, E2, F1, F2, F3, and N4 will all run on detours throughout the morning.

Marathon Course Closes Key City Center Corridors

The Dublin City Half Marathon route cuts through some of the busiest transit corridors in Ireland's capital, requiring coordinated street closures across the city center and northern neighborhoods. Talbot Street will be closed west of Gardiner Street until 10:30 a.m., while Drumcondra Road's inbound lanes will be shut from 8:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Beaumont and Collins Avenue East will both be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The closures affect routes serving neighborhoods from the city center to the northern suburbs, with most diversions routing buses via Gardiner Street and Beresford Place.

Two Dozen Routes Face Morning Detours

The service changes affect nearly two dozen routes spanning Dublin Bus's network, from core city routes to express services. Routes 1, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 16, 19, 27, 33, 38, 40d, 41, 44, and 53 will all operate on diversions, along with cross-city routes 120 and 122. Express routes E1 and E2, frequent routes F1, F2, and F3, and night route N4 will also be affected. Most diverted buses will use Gardiner Street, Beresford Place, and alternative city center streets to bypass closed sections of the marathon course. Dublin Bus didn't specify how much additional travel time riders should expect on affected routes.

Closures Begin Early Sunday Morning

The first street closures take effect at 3 a.m. Sunday, May 3, when O'Connell Street southbound shuts to traffic. Northbound lanes on O'Connell Street will close at 6:30 a.m., followed by Drumcondra Road inbound at 8:15 a.m. and Beaumont and Collins Avenue East at 8:30 a.m. Most streets will reopen by 10:30 a.m., though O'Connell Street southbound won't reopen until 1 p.m. The staggered closure times reflect the progression of runners through different sections of the course.

Riders Can Track Detours Through Moovit

Dublin Bus riders affected by the marathon detours should plan alternative routes or allow extra travel time Sunday morning. The transit agency will post updates throughout race day but didn't say whether it'll add extra buses to accommodate displaced riders. Riders can check Moovit for real-time updates on affected routes and alternative travel options during the marathon. The app provides live bus locations and adjusted arrival times as diversions take effect throughout the morning.
