Loudoun Gateway station recorded a 34% ridership increase compared to last year, while Ashburn station saw a 29% jump, according to ridership data reported in November 2025. The gains show growing demand for rail service in Loudoun County, where the extension opened November 15, 2022.

Extension Connects Growing Corridor

The Phase II extension added 11.4 miles and six stations to the Silver Line, reaching Washington Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County for the first time. The $3 billion project completed a decades-long effort to connect Metro rail to the Dulles Corridor, according to the transit agency. Loudoun County has experienced significant population and employment growth, particularly in technology sectors, creating increased demand for transit connections. The extension serves Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Dulles Airport, Loudoun Gateway, and Ashburn stations.

Ridership Reflects Regional Growth

The ridership increases at Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn represent the highest growth among Phase II stations, officials said, though specific passenger counts weren't released. Randy Clarke, General Manager and CEO of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, said at the 2022 opening that the extension would 'transform how people travel in Northern Virginia.' The percentage gains reflect broader regional development patterns in the Dulles Corridor, where employment centers and residential communities have expanded rapidly. Officials didn't provide ridership data for the other four Phase II stations for comparison.

Three Years of Service

The Phase II extension opened November 15, 2022, eight years after Phase I brought Silver Line service to Wiehle-Reston East in 2014. Planning for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project began in 2004, making the completion a nearly two-decade effort. The extension provides the first direct rail connection to Dulles Airport, a long-sought regional goal. Officials didn't release a formal statement marking the third anniversary milestone.

Impact on Commuters

The ridership growth suggests the extension is meeting transportation needs in expanding Loudoun County communities, transit officials said. Riders traveling to employment centers, the airport, and destinations throughout the Metro system have increasingly relied on the western stations.
