DC Metro Safeguards D10 Service During 5K Event
D10 bus route detours around 13th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue for FITDC 5K event
DC D10 Bus Detours for 5K Race March 6-7
D10 bus riders in downtown Washington will encounter temporary detours this weekend as the route adjusts for the FITDC HerStory 5K event. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced the changes will affect service Friday, March 6, from 6:00 PM to 4:00 AM and Saturday, March 7, from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. The D10 normally runs between Southern Avenue Station and Kennedy Center, serving Pennsylvania Avenue through downtown.

Street Closures Drive Route Changes
The detour's necessary because 13th Street NW from E Street to Pennsylvania Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue NW from 13th Street to 14th Street will be closed during the event timeframes, according to WMATA. The closures accommodate preparations for the FITDC HerStory 5K, which celebrates women's achievements and promotes community fitness. Transit agencies typically implement temporary detours for special events that require street closures in downtown areas, particularly when major thoroughfares are affected. WMATA provides rail, bus, and MetroAccess services throughout the Washington metropolitan area.
Detour Routes for East and Westbound Service
Eastbound D10 buses will detour on 13th Street NW at F Street and resume regular routing on Pennsylvania Avenue NW at 10th Street, WMATA said. Westbound buses will take a different path, detouring on Pennsylvania Avenue NW at 11th Street and resuming regular service on 13th Street NW at G Street. The detours will add approximately 2-3 minutes to travel times, though officials didn't provide specific delay estimates. Riders should allow extra time for their trips during the detour periods.

Weekend Implementation Timeline
The first detour period begins Friday evening at 6:00 PM and continues until 4:00 AM Saturday morning. The second detour period runs Saturday afternoon from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. WMATA typically provides advance notice for special event detours, allowing riders to plan alternative routes or adjust travel times. The authority didn't specify whether additional service adjustments might be needed if the event schedule changes.
Staying Informed About Service Changes
D10 riders should expect minor delays and plan extra travel time during the detour periods. WMATA encourages passengers to sign up for MetroAlerts for real-time service information about route changes and delays. Moovit provides real-time D10 bus tracking and alternative route suggestions for riders navigating the weekend detours in downtown Washington.
