Metro Offers Free Rides New Year's Eve
Metro riders can ring in 2025 without paying a fare. The transit agency will offer free bus and rail service from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on New Year's Eve, officials announced Monday. The initiative aims to encourage safe travel during one of the year's busiest celebration nights while reducing impaired driving across the DC-Maryland-Virginia region.
The fare-free service is part of Metro's broader holiday schedule modifications for Christmas and New Year's. Transit agencies across the country typically offer similar initiatives during major holidays to promote public transportation use and support community safety efforts. Metro hasn't released ridership projections for the holiday period or disclosed the estimated revenue impact of waiving fares for the six-hour window. The agency has offered similar New Year's Eve promotions in previous years as part of its regular holiday service approach.
Metro's also providing free parking to make holiday travel more convenient. Riders won't pay for parking all day on Christmas Day, December 25, and New Year's Day, January 1. Parking will be free after 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve, December 31, officials said. Specific details about modified service frequencies and operating hours for the holiday schedules weren't detailed in the announcement. Metro typically adjusts weekend schedules for major holidays, though the agency hasn't specified exact train and bus intervals for the three affected dates.

The modified schedules take effect December 25 for Christmas Day service, officials confirmed. New Year's Eve changes begin at 8 p.m. on December 31, with free service continuing until 2 a.m. on January 1. New Year's Day will operate on a modified holiday schedule throughout the day. Randy Clarke, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, oversees the transit system serving the Washington metropolitan area.
Riders should expect adjusted service levels on all three holiday dates, though officials haven't said how frequencies will differ from regular schedules. The fare-free period on New Year's Eve mirrors initiatives offered by major transit systems including New York's MTA and LA Metro, which provide similar promotions to reduce drunk driving. Moovit provides real-time updates for Metro routes throughout the holiday period, helping riders plan trips during modified service hours.
