Expanding Multimodal Transportation Options

The bike infrastructure expansion represents a significant increase in cycling amenities across Metro's 98-station system. Transit agencies nationwide have been adding bike parking to encourage riders to combine cycling with public transit, according to the Federal Transit Administration. Metro currently offers bike parking at many stations, but officials said this expansion will substantially increase capacity. The agency hasn't disclosed the total cost of the project.

Amenities Designed for Different Cyclist Needs

The 450 bike lockers will provide secure, enclosed storage for daily commuters, while the 50 cargo lockers accommodate larger items like e-bikes and cargo bikes. The 100 self-locking racks offer convenient short-term parking without requiring riders to bring their own locks. Metro's also installing 75 repair stations equipped with tools for basic bike maintenance. The 600 U-racks will provide additional parking capacity at high-traffic stations, though officials haven't released the complete list of which stations will receive which amenities.

Installation Timeline and Station Selection

Installation's expected to begin in early 2026, according to Ian Jannetta, Assistant General Manager for Communications. "We're excited to expand bike parking and amenities at stations across the region," Jannetta said. "This investment will make it easier for customers to combine biking with Metro trips." Officials said they're still finalizing the complete list of 73 stations that'll receive the upgrades.

What Cyclists Need to Know

The expansion will affect roughly three-quarters of Metro's 98 stations, making bike-and-ride options available throughout the system. Officials said they'll announce the complete station list and specific installation schedules before work begins.
