DC Bus Routes Detour for Emancipation Day Parade
Two Washington DC bus routes will take temporary detours around Pennsylvania Avenue for the annual DC Emancipation Day Parade and Festival, transit officials said. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced the D10 route will detour from Friday, April 17, 2026, at 6:00 PM through Monday, April 20, 2026, at 6:00 AM, while the D1X will detour on event day, Saturday, April 19. Street closures will affect Pennsylvania Avenue between 12th Street and 14th Street, NW, as well as 13th Street between E Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.
Parade Requires Multi-Day Street Closures
The extended detour period accommodates both the festival build-out and the parade itself, according to WMATA. The DC Emancipation Day celebration commemorates the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia on April 16, 1862, nine months before the Emancipation Proclamation. The multi-day closure allows crews to set up stages, vendor areas, and safety barriers along Pennsylvania Avenue. Transit agencies typically implement detours several days before major downtown events to allow for infrastructure setup and post-event breakdown.

Specific Detour Routes Announced
The D10 route traveling eastbound toward Southern Avenue will detour on 13th Street, NW at E Street, resuming its regular route on Pennsylvania Avenue, SE at 6th Street, officials said. Westbound D10 buses heading toward Kennedy Center will detour on Pennsylvania Avenue, SE at 6th Street, resuming the regular route on 13th Street, NW at G Street. The D1X route will follow a modified path on Saturday, April 19, though WMATA didn't provide specific turn-by-turn directions for that route. Officials said both routes will serve their regular stops outside the closure area.
Detours Begin Friday Evening
The D10 detour takes effect at 6:00 PM on Friday, April 17, allowing crews to begin festival setup over the weekend, according to WMATA. The detour remains in place through early Monday morning, ending at 6:00 AM on April 20 after cleanup is complete. The D1X detour operates only on Saturday, April 19, during the parade and festival. Officials said riders should allow extra travel time during the detour period.

Riders Can Track Real-Time Changes
Passengers should expect minor delays as buses navigate detour routes through downtown Washington, transit officials said. WMATA operates bus, rail, and MetroAccess services throughout the Washington metropolitan area. Riders can track real-time bus locations and receive service alerts through Moovit, which provides up-to-date information for all WMATA routes during detours and special events.
