CTA Route 94 Adjusts for California Avenue Work
CTA Route 94 bus detours around California Avenue construction from March 2 to May 11, 2026
CTA Route 94 Detours for 10 Weeks on California
Chicago's Route 94 California bus will detour around construction for more than two months starting March 2, 2026. Northbound buses will reroute via California, Archer, and Pershing before returning to their regular path, the Chicago Transit Authority said. The detour runs from 4:00 AM on Monday, March 2 through 7:00 PM on Monday, May 11, 2026. Southbound service won't be affected by the construction work.

Construction Prompts Service Adjustment
The reroute is necessary due to construction work on California Avenue between Archer and Pershing, transit officials said. The 10-week timeline suggests significant infrastructure work that'll require closing portions of the roadway to through traffic. Construction-related detours typically affect travel times and require riders to adjust their commuting schedules. The CTA didn't specify what type of construction work is planned for the corridor, though street reconstruction projects in Chicago often involve utility upgrades, resurfacing, and infrastructure improvements.
Two Bus Stops Relocate During Detour
Two northbound stops will temporarily move to accommodate the detour route. The northbound Route 94 stop at the northeast corner of California and Archer will shift to the southeast corner during the construction period. The northbound stop at the southeast corner of California and Pershing will relocate to the northeast corner. Southbound stops will remain in their current locations since southbound service continues operating normally. Passengers are advised to allow extra travel time when using this route during the detour period.

Detour Runs Through Mid-May
The service change takes effect at 4:00 AM on Monday, March 2, 2026, and continues through 7:00 PM on Monday, May 11, 2026. The CTA typically provides advance notice of construction-related detours to give riders time to plan alternate routes or adjust travel schedules. Officials didn't say whether the May 11 end date could change if construction runs longer than expected.
Riders Can Track Detour in Real Time
The Route 94 detour is one of multiple service alerts currently active across the CTA bus system, though most rail lines are operating normally. The Purple and Yellow Lines are running added service, according to the transit agency's system status. Riders affected by the California Avenue construction can check Moovit for real-time bus locations and updated arrival times during the 10-week detour period.
