CTA Reroutes #39 Bus for Indiana Construction
Chicago's #39 Pershing bus route is running on a detour through the South Side due to street construction, the Chicago Transit Authority said Tuesday. The reroute affects both directions of service along Indiana Avenue between 41st and 31st streets, where construction work is underway. Officials haven't said when the route will return to normal service.

Construction Prompts Service Changes
The reroute began April 7 at 8:16 a.m. as part of planned construction work on Indiana Avenue, according to the transit agency. CTA officials said the detour is necessary to maintain safe bus operations while construction crews work on the street. The agency typically implements temporary reroutes when street conditions prevent buses from using their normal paths. Officials didn't provide details about the construction project's scope or which agency is managing the work.
Route Details and Affected Streets
Eastbound #39 buses now travel via 41st Street and Prairie Avenue before returning to their regular route on Pershing Road, CTA officials said. Westbound buses use 41st Street and Wabash Avenue before resuming normal service on Pershing. The detour adds several blocks to the route in both directions. Officials said riders should expect slightly longer travel times during the reroute period.

No End Date Set for Detour
The reroute's end date is listed as to be determined, with officials saying the change will remain in effect until construction work is complete. The CTA didn't provide an estimated timeline for when buses might return to Indiana Avenue. Transit officials said they'll announce the route's return to normal service once construction wraps up.
Riders Advised to Plan Ahead
Passengers should allow extra travel time while the detour is in effect, CTA officials said. The #39 Pershing route is one of more than a dozen CTA bus routes currently operating with service alerts, including routes 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 24, 29, 36, and 37.
