CTA Maintains Red Line With Overnight Track Work
CTA Red Line northbound trains to bypass Addison Station overnight for track work
CTA Red Line Skips Addison Friday Night
Chicago Red Line riders heading north this weekend will need to plan around a station closure. The Chicago Transit Authority announced Howard-bound trains won't stop at Addison Station from 10 p.m. Friday, March 13, 2026, through 8 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2026, transit officials said. The overnight bypass affects northbound service only during scheduled track maintenance work. Officials said the work is necessary to ensure continued safe train operations along the Red Line.

Maintenance Work Requires Temporary Service Adjustment
The CTA regularly performs track maintenance during overnight and weekend hours to minimize disruption to weekday commuters, according to the transit agency. Friday night into Saturday morning represents one of the lowest ridership periods for the Red Line, making it an optimal window for infrastructure work. Officials said the maintenance is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the system's aging infrastructure and prevent service disruptions. The Red Line serves as Chicago's busiest rail line, carrying an average of more than 70,000 riders on weekdays, though specific ridership figures for the Addison Station weren't provided.
Riders Must Use Nearby Stations for Access
Passengers needing to reach Addison Station during the closure should take a Howard-bound train to Sheridan or Wilson, then transfer to a 95th-bound train back to Addison, transit officials said. Riders departing from Addison should take a 95th-bound train to Belmont, then transfer to a Howard-bound train. At Sheridan Station, all passengers must board and exit trains on the Howard-bound platform in both directions during this period, the CTA said. The agency didn't specify whether additional trains will be added to accommodate transfers or how long the alternative routing will add to typical travel times.

Service Returns to Normal Saturday Morning
Normal Red Line service at Addison Station will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2026, officials confirmed. The CTA said the maintenance work is scheduled to be completed by that time, allowing Howard-bound trains to resume regular stops. Officials didn't say whether the work could extend beyond the scheduled window if complications arise. The transit agency typically announces service changes several days in advance to give riders time to plan alternative routes.
Plan Ahead for Weekend Travel
Riders traveling through the affected area should allow extra time for transfers and alternative routing, transit officials said. The bypass affects only Howard-bound trains, while 95th-bound service will continue to stop at Addison normally throughout the maintenance period. Passengers can check Moovit for real-time Red Line updates and trip planning assistance during the service change. Adjacent stations at Belmont, Sheridan, and Wilson remain fully operational and provide alternative access points for riders in the Lakeview neighborhood.
