CTA Adds Beach Bus Service on Four Routes

Chicago's lakefront beaches will be easier to reach this summer as the CTA adds enhanced weekend service on four bus routes. The transit agency will expand service to popular beach destinations starting March 29, with routes running Sundays and holidays through mid-August, officials said. The seasonal service aims to improve access to Chicago's recreational lakefront areas during peak beach season.

Seasonal Service Targets Peak Beach Season

The expanded beach service addresses growing demand for public transit access to Chicago's lakefront during warm weather months, according to the transit agency. Chicago's beaches attract millions of visitors annually, with North Avenue Beach and Montrose Beach ranking among the city's most popular recreational destinations. The Sunday and holiday service schedule aligns with peak beach attendance periods when parking at lakefront locations is typically limited. Transit agencies in coastal and lakefront cities often provide seasonal service enhancements to recreational areas during summer months.

Four Routes Serve Major Beach Destinations

Routes #35, #63, #72, and #78 will provide the enhanced beach service, serving 31st Street Beach, 63rd Street Beach, North Avenue Beach, and Montrose Beach respectively. Service will operate between approximately 9:00 AM and 9:30 PM on operating days, officials said. The agency didn't specify exact headways or how many additional trips will be added compared to regular Sunday service. Riders can use standard CTA fares including Ventra cards and the Ventra app to access the beach routes.

Service Begins Late March

The enhanced beach service takes effect March 29 and will continue through mid-August, though officials didn't provide a specific end date. The timing coincides with the typical opening of Chicago Park District beach facilities and lifeguard services. The CTA said it will communicate service details through its alert system and social media channels as the start date approaches.

Riders Can Plan Beach Trips

Beachgoers can expect more frequent Sunday and holiday service on the four routes during the seasonal period, making car-free trips to the lakefront more convenient. Officials said the service enhancement supports access to Chicago's public recreational spaces during peak summer months.
