CTA Expands Beach Access with Seasonal Routes
CTA expands weekend service on routes 35, 63, 72, and 78 to connect riders to beaches
CTA Adds Beach Bus Service on Four Routes
Chicago's lakefront beaches will be easier to reach this summer as the CTA adds enhanced weekend service on four bus routes. The transit agency announced the seasonal expansion will begin March 29, connecting riders to popular beach destinations along Lake Michigan. Routes #35, #63, #72, and #78 will operate Sundays and holidays through mid-August, officials said.

Seasonal Service Targets Recreation Access
The expanded beach service addresses seasonal demand for lakefront access during Chicago's warmer months. Transit agencies typically enhance routes to recreational destinations during peak usage periods to reduce parking congestion and provide car-free access to popular areas. The CTA's seasonal approach mirrors strategies used by transit systems in coastal cities nationwide. Officials said the service aims to improve connectivity between neighborhoods and Chicago's lakefront recreational areas, though ridership projections for the routes weren't provided.
Four Routes Serve Major Beach Destinations
Route #35 will serve 31st Street Beach, while route #63 connects to 63rd Street Beach on the South Side. On the North Side, route #72 provides access to North Avenue Beach, and route #78 serves Montrose Beach. Service will run between approximately 9:00 AM and 9:30 PM on operating days, officials said. The agency didn't specify exact headways or how many additional trips will be added compared to regular weekend service. All four routes operate year-round but will see enhanced frequency during the seasonal beach service period.

Service Runs Through Mid-August
The beach bus service takes effect March 29, 2026, and will operate on Sundays and holidays through mid-August. Officials didn't provide a specific end date for the seasonal service. The CTA typically adjusts seasonal routes based on weather patterns and ridership demand, though officials haven't said whether service could be extended if conditions warrant. The agency maintains communication through social media, alerts, and customer service channels for service updates.
Riders Can Plan Trips with Real-Time Tools
Beach-bound riders can use standard CTA fares with Ventra cards or the Ventra app for payment on all four routes. The seasonal service provides an alternative to driving and paid parking at lakefront beaches during peak summer weekends. Moovit provides real-time bus tracking and trip planning for CTA routes, helping riders time their beach trips and check current service status throughout the day.
