The Chicago Transit Authority closed the elevator Monday, November 17, at 4:00 AM, with service expected to resume Saturday, May 30, 2026. The six-month closure affects passengers who can't use escalators or stairs to reach the Loop-bound platform.

Upgrade Project Extends Through Spring 2026

The elevator closure is part of an upgrade project to ensure continued safe and accessible service at the Western station, transit officials said. The work represents one of several accessibility improvements the CTA has undertaken across its rail system in recent years. Officials said the estimated return to service date is subject to change based on construction progress. During the closure, passengers will need to use escalators marked for entry only or stairs to access the Loop-bound platform.

Transfer Options Available at Adjacent Stations

For accessible boarding of Loop-bound Brown Line trains from Western, passengers should take a Kimball-bound train to Rockwell station and transfer to a Loop-bound train, the CTA said. Riders seeking accessible service to Western should take a Loop-bound train to Damen station and transfer to a Kimball-bound train. Passengers can also use the adjacent accessible Damen and Rockwell stations as alternatives, both of which offer full elevator access. The CTA advises travelers to allow extra travel time due to these changes.

Service Disruption Runs Through May 2026

The elevator has been out of service since mid-November 2025, with the closure expected to last approximately six months. Officials said the extended timeline reflects the complexity of elevator modernization work at elevated stations. The CTA hasn't provided specific details about what components are being upgraded or whether the project includes structural improvements beyond the elevator system itself.
