CTA Brown Line Elevator Upgrades Accessibility
CTA closes Western Brown Line elevator until May 2026 for accessibility upgrades
Brown Line Western Station Elevator Closed
Riders who need accessible boarding at CTA's Western station on the Brown Line must use alternate stations or transfer routes while the Loop-bound platform elevator undergoes upgrades. The Chicago Transit Authority closed the elevator Monday, November 17, at 4:00 AM, with service expected to resume Saturday, May 30, 2026. The closure affects passengers who can't use escalators or stairs to reach the Loop-bound platform.

Upgrade Project Extends Six Months
The elevator closure is part of an upgrade project to ensure continued safe and accessible service at the Western station, transit officials said. The work represents one of several accessibility improvements the CTA's undertaken at stations along the Brown Line. Officials didn't specify what components are being upgraded or whether the project includes modernization of elevator systems. The estimated return to service date is subject to change, the agency noted.
Transfer Options Available at Adjacent Stations
Passengers needing accessible boarding of Loop-bound Brown Line trains from Western should take a Kimball-bound train to Rockwell station and transfer to a Loop-bound train, the CTA said. For accessible service to Western, riders should take a Loop-bound train to Damen station and transfer to a Kimball-bound train. Passengers can also use the adjacent accessible Damen and Rockwell stations as alternatives. During the closure, riders who can navigate stairs or escalators will still be able to access the Loop-bound platform at Western using escalators, which are entry only, or stairs.

Six-Month Closure Requires Planning
The closure began in mid-November 2025 and will extend through late May 2026, spanning more than six months. The CTA advises travelers to allow extra travel time due to the required transfers or use of alternate stations. Officials haven't said whether shuttle bus service or other temporary accommodations will be provided during the extended closure. The agency's system status shows normal service on most rail lines, with added service on Purple and Yellow Lines.
Riders Should Plan Alternate Routes
Passengers who regularly use the Western station elevator should plan their trips to account for transfers at Rockwell or Damen stations or consider using those stations directly. The extended closure means riders needing accessible boarding will face longer travel times for more than six months. Transit officials said the upgrades will improve long-term accessibility at the station. Moovit provides real-time CTA updates and can help riders plan trips using accessible stations and transfer options during the elevator closure.
