CTA Blue Line Track Work Maintains System Safety
CTA Blue Line runs single track between LaSalle and Grand stations overnight for maintenance
CTA Blue Line Faces Delays for Track Work
Chicago's Blue Line will experience minor delays overnight Wednesday as trains operate on a single track between LaSalle and Grand stations, the Chicago Transit Authority announced. The service change takes effect April 22 at 10:00 PM and continues through 4:00 AM April 23. Riders should expect altered boarding procedures at four downtown stations during the maintenance window.

Track Maintenance Requires Temporary Service Changes
The single-track operation is necessary to perform track maintenance that ensures trains continue to operate safely along the Blue Line, according to the transit agency. CTA regularly conducts overnight maintenance work to minimize disruption to weekday commuters while addressing infrastructure needs. The agency said the work must be completed during the specified six-hour window to maintain system reliability. Transit officials didn't specify what type of track maintenance will be performed during the work period.
Four Stations See Modified Boarding Procedures
Passengers must board and exit all trains on the Forest Park-bound side of the platform at Jackson, Monroe, Washington, and Clark/Lake stations during the maintenance period. Both inbound and outbound trains will use the same track between LaSalle and Grand, requiring riders to adjust their normal boarding locations. The CTA advised travelers to allow extra travel time during this period to account for minor delays caused by the single-track operation. Officials said the boarding changes apply only to the overnight maintenance window.

Overnight Work Window Targets Off-Peak Hours
The planned work begins Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 10:00 PM and concludes Thursday, April 23, at 4:00 AM, targeting the system's lowest ridership period. The six-hour maintenance window allows crews to complete necessary track work while minimizing impact on daily commuters. Normal service patterns will resume after 4:00 AM Thursday, officials said.
Riders Can Track Service Changes in Real Time
The Blue Line modifications are part of broader system maintenance, with several CTA rail lines currently experiencing planned work or added service. Multiple bus routes are affected by alerts, and elevator outages are reported across different stations, according to the transit agency. Riders can monitor real-time service updates and plan alternative routes using Moovit, which provides current information for all CTA lines and helps passengers navigate service changes during maintenance periods.
