CTA Adjusts Route 192 for Infrastructure Work
CTA Route 192 northbound buses reroute via Roosevelt and Jefferson streets due to Canal Street reconstruction
CTA Reroutes Route 192 Bus Starting Dec 15
Chicago's route 192 U. of Chicago Hospitals Express will take a different path through downtown starting Monday, transit officials said. Northbound buses will use Roosevelt and Jefferson streets instead of their usual route, ending trips at Jefferson and Washington. The change affects only northbound service, with southbound buses continuing on their regular route.

Construction Project Drives Service Change
The reroute stems from the Chicago Department of Transportation's Canal Street Reconstruction Project, according to the transit agency. The infrastructure work requires temporary adjustments to multiple bus routes in the downtown area. Officials said the project is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade aging street infrastructure in the Loop and surrounding neighborhoods. The CTA hasn't specified how long the reconstruction work will last or when route 192 will return to its normal path.
Riders Face Longer Travel Times
Passengers should expect delays and plan for extra travel time while the detour is in effect, transit officials said. The route serves University of Chicago medical facilities and connects South Side neighborhoods to downtown Chicago. Officials didn't provide estimates for how much additional time the reroute might add to trips. The 192 is among more than 40 CTA bus routes currently operating under service alerts, including routes 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 24, 29, 36, 37, 39, 47, 53, 60, 62, 66, 67, 71, 72, 73, 76, 85, 94, 95, 97, 115, 124, 125, 126, 135, 146, 148, 151, 152, 157, 201, and 206.

No End Date Set for Temporary Route
The reroute takes effect December 15, 2025, but officials haven't announced when normal service will resume. The CTA typically provides advance notice before restoring regular routes after construction-related detours, though specific timelines depend on project completion. Transit officials said they'll announce the return to normal routing once the Canal Street work is finished.
How to Track Service Changes
Riders can monitor real-time bus locations and schedule changes through CTA's Bus Tracker system, officials said. The agency encourages passengers to check current alerts before traveling and subscribe to route-specific notifications. Moovit provides real-time updates for CTA routes, helping riders navigate detours and plan alternative trips during construction-related service changes.
