Chicago Route 60 Reroutes for Canal Street Work
Route 60 buses detour via Harrison and Jefferson streets due to Canal Street work
CTA Reroutes Route 60 Buses for Canal Work
Chicago's Route 60 Blue Island/26th buses will detour around Canal Street construction starting this week, transit officials said. Eastbound buses will use Harrison and Jefferson streets before returning to their regular path on Washington, while westbound service continues unchanged. The reroute affects one of the city's key crosstown routes connecting the South Side to downtown.

Construction Project Drives Service Change
The Chicago Department of Transportation's Canal Street Reconstruction Project requires the temporary route modification, according to the transit agency. The infrastructure work blocks the route's normal path through the West Loop corridor. Officials didn't specify when the Canal Street project will be completed or how long the bus detour will remain in effect. Transit agencies typically implement planned reroutes when street reconstruction projects make regular routes impassable for extended periods.
Five New Bus Stops Serve Eastbound Riders
The CTA designated five temporary boarding locations for eastbound Route 60 passengers along the detour path. Riders can board at the northeast corner of Jefferson and Harrison, Jefferson and Van Buren, and Jefferson and Jackson. Additional stops are located at the southwest corner of Jefferson and Washington, plus Washington and Canal where buses rejoin their normal route. Officials advised passengers to allow extra travel time during the reroute period, though they didn't provide estimates for potential delays.
Detour Remains in Place During Construction
The reroute will continue throughout the Canal Street reconstruction work, transit officials said. The agency didn't announce a specific end date for the service change or provide a timeline for when buses will return to their regular route. Officials said they'll maintain the temporary boarding locations until construction is completed and normal service can resume.
Riders Can Track Detoured Buses
Route 60 passengers should plan for the modified path when traveling through the affected area, particularly during morning and evening commute hours. The westbound direction continues to operate on its regular route without changes. Moovit provides real-time bus locations and updated route maps for the temporary detour, helping riders find the new boarding locations along Jefferson Street.
