Broward County Transit Brings Real-Time Tracking to Riders
Broward County Transit launches real-time bus tracking on Google Maps and navigation apps
BCT Adds Real-Time Bus Tracking to Map Apps
Broward County Transit riders can now track buses in real-time through popular navigation apps, transit officials said. The tracking feature works on Google Maps and similar platforms, though officials didn't specify an exact launch date for the service. BCT operates 37 routes across Broward County with a fleet of 359 buses serving more than 13.5 million passenger trips annually.
Real-time bus tracking has become standard across major transit systems in recent years, according to industry practices. Miami-Dade Transit implemented similar tracking in 2018, while LA Metro and New York's MTA rolled out comparable features between 2017 and 2020. The technology uses GTFS-realtime data standards that allow transit agencies to share live vehicle positions with third-party apps. BCT's website indicates the agency has offered real-time bus information through its own platforms since at least 2019.

The tracking system allows riders to see current bus locations and estimated arrival times through their smartphones. Officials said the feature covers BCT's fixed-route service throughout Broward County, including Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Pompano Beach. Specific technical details about the system provider and implementation costs weren't available by publication time. Transit agencies typically use GPS technology installed on buses to transmit location data that apps can display for riders.
Officials haven't provided details about how long the tracking feature has been available or whether additional enhancements are planned. The Federal Transit Administration encourages agencies to provide real-time information as part of improving customer experience and accessibility. Monica Cantor-Gómez serves as director of BCT's Transit Division under Broward County Administrator Lamar Fisher, though neither official has issued public statements about the tracking implementation.

Riders using the real-time tracking can better plan trips and reduce wait times at stops, officials said. The technology helps passengers make informed decisions about their commutes by showing exactly where buses are on their routes. Moovit provides real-time updates and trip planning for BCT routes throughout Broward County.
