Broad Street Run Closes Major Philly Transit Corridor
Philadelphia's Broad Street closes 2 a.m. to noon Sunday for 40,000-runner race
Broad Street Run Closes Roads Sunday in Philly
Philadelphia's Broad Street will close for the annual 10-mile race Sunday, May 4, affecting thousands of commuters and residents. The 47th Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run brings 40,000 runners to the city, with rolling road closures starting at 2 a.m. and lasting until noon. Officials said the course runs from Central High School Athletic Field in Logan to the Navy Yard, covering the entire length of Broad Street from Olney Avenue south.

Transit Options and Parking Restrictions
The race creates significant transportation challenges for the city's busiest north-south corridor. No parking will be permitted on Broad Street from Olney Avenue to the Navy Yard between 2 a.m. and noon Sunday, officials said. The closure affects one of Philadelphia's primary arterial roads, which typically carries heavy weekend traffic. Transit officials strongly recommend using public transportation, with runners able to ride the Broad Street Line for free by showing their race bib. The course is expected to reopen by noon based on previous years' experience.
Free Parking and Rideshare Zones Available
Officials announced several transportation alternatives for race participants and spectators. Free parking will be available at the Stadium Complex starting at 4 a.m., though officials didn't specify how many spaces will be offered. Rideshare drop-off zones will be located at Broad Street and Chew Avenue, as well as Ogontz and Somerville avenues. An I-95 South detour will be in effect due to the Walt Whitman Bridge/Packer Avenue exit closure for construction. More than 500 portable toilets and multiple water stations will be available along the course.

Race Starts at 7 a.m. Sunday Morning
The nation's largest 10-mile race begins at 7 a.m. from Central High School Athletic Field in Logan, with runners finishing at the Navy Yard. Rolling road closures will begin five hours before the start time to allow for course setup and security. The event will include a Kids Run & Fun Zone in the northwest quadrant of the Parade Grounds with age-based races for children under 12. Officials said the course is expected to reopen by noon, though specific reopening times for individual street segments weren't provided.
Riders Should Plan Alternate Routes Sunday
Commuters and residents should expect significant delays and plan alternate routes throughout Sunday morning. The closure affects the entire length of Broad Street through Center City and South Philadelphia, one of the region's most heavily traveled corridors. Transit officials recommend allowing extra travel time and using east-west streets to navigate around the closed course.
